Wayne is an unincorporated community on the Philadelphia Main Line, straddling the boundary of Radnor Township in Delaware County and Tredyffrin Township in Chester County. The community grew around the Wayne station of the Pennsylvania Railroad, opened as a stop on the original Main Line in the 1830s. The surrounding neighborhood was developed in the late nineteenth century by Anthony J. Drexel and George W. Childs as a planned railroad suburb with large Victorian homes on generously sized lots.
Wayne is named after General Anthony Wayne, the Revolutionary War general from Pennsylvania who led colonial troops at the Battle of Stony Point and the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The downtown area along Lancaster Avenue (US Route 30) and Wayne Avenue hosts restaurants, specialty shops, and a movie theater. The Anthony Wayne Theater, opened in 1928, is a historic single-screen movie house that has operated continuously in the village.
Transportation to Philadelphia is provided by SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line, which stops at Wayne station along the original Main Line route. Amtrak's Keystone Service does not stop at Wayne, but the Regional Rail connection provides a 30-minute trip into 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. The community is known for its wealth and highly rated public and private schools, including the Shipley School, Valley Forge Military Academy, and the Radnor Township School District.
