Phoenixville is a borough in Chester County, about 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River and French Creek. The population is approximately 19,700. The community was incorporated in 1849 and takes its name from the Phoenix Iron Works, which operated from 1790 until 1987 and was for decades a major producer of iron and steel products, including wrought iron columns, rails, and the structural Phoenix columns used in many nineteenth-century buildings. The Phoenixville Foundry, which cast components for the ironclad warships Monitor and Merrimac, operated in the borough during the Civil War.
After the decline and 1987 closure of Phoenix Iron & Steel, the borough experienced significant economic distress through the 1990s. Downtown revitalization efforts starting in the early 2000s transformed the Bridge Street commercial corridor into a small-scale dining, brewing, and arts destination. The Colonial Theatre, originally opened in 1903 and featured in the 1958 horror film The Blob (filmed partly in and around Phoenixville), reopened after restoration and serves as a cultural anchor. The annual Blobfest celebrates the connection with reenactments and themed events.
Brewing has become a notable feature of the borough. Phoenixville hosts several craft breweries and distilleries, with the first, Sly Fox Brewing, moving into the area in the 1990s. Pottstown, Collegeville, and the Route 23 corridor provide highway access, while the Schuylkill River Trail extends through the borough.
