McKeesport is a city in Allegheny County at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers, about twelve miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. It was incorporated as a borough in 1842 and as a city in 1891. McKeesport was founded by David McKee, a Scotch-Irish settler who established a ferry at the site in 1755. The community's population peaked at approximately 55,000 in 1940 and has declined to around 17,000 today.
McKeesport was the site of the National Tube Works, a U.S. Steel facility that was for decades one of the largest producers of welded steel tubing and pipe in the world. At its peak the National Works employed over 10,000 people. The plant closed in stages through the 1980s, and its closure was a central episode in the decline of western Pennsylvania's steel economy. The site is now occupied by the RIDC Industrial Center, a redevelopment project.
The Penn State Greater Allegheny campus, located in McKeesport, serves as a regional branch of the Pennsylvania State University system. McKeesport Area High School, the Little Italy neighborhood, and the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center document aspects of the city's industrial and immigrant heritage. The city sits at the southern end of the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, which extends from McKeesport to Cumberland, Maryland.
