Lower Moyamensing, often called Lo-Mo by residents, is a South Philadelphia neighborhood bounded roughly by Mifflin Street to the north, Oregon Avenue to the south, Broad Street to the east, and Seventh Street to the west. The name derives from Moyamensing Township, which predated Philadelphia's 1854 consolidation with its surrounding townships. Moyamensing comes from the Lenape language, commonly translated as "place of pigeon droppings" or "unclean land."
Development of the neighborhood occurred largely in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Philadelphia's southward expansion filled in the area with attached rowhomes on narrow lots. The housing stock is predominantly two-story brick rowhomes, many with the arched doorways and decorative lintels characteristic of South Philadelphia construction from that period. Italian-American families dominated much of the twentieth century, with significant Irish and Jewish populations in certain pockets. More recent decades have brought Vietnamese, Cambodian, Mexican, and Dominican populations to the neighborhood.
Stephen Girard Park, Mifflin Square Park, and the nearby Marconi Plaza at Broad and Oregon provide public green space. SEPTA's Broad Street Line runs along the eastern edge, with the Snyder and Oregon stations providing subway access into Center City.
