Lansdale is a borough in Montgomery County, about 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The population is around 19,000. The community was incorporated as a borough in 1872, taking its name from Philip Lansdale Fox, a surveyor for the North Pennsylvania Railroad who laid out the original town grid around the rail line in the 1850s. The railroad that became the original SEPTA Lansdale/Doylestown Regional Rail Line still serves the borough, with the Lansdale station providing frequent service to Center City.
Lansdale developed as an industrial and commercial hub for upper Montgomery County through the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with manufacturing, agricultural supply, and railroad-related businesses forming the economic base. The American Olean Tile Company, a major producer of ceramic tiles, was headquartered in Lansdale for decades. The Lansdale Catholic High School and the North Penn School District serve local students.
Main Street and Broad Street form the commercial core of the downtown, and the borough has seen revitalization efforts focused on the train station area and adjacent commercial blocks. The 3rd Thursday in downtown Lansdale, a monthly summer event, draws visitors to the borough's restaurants and shops.
