Lancaster: Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the Central Market

Lancaster was founded in 1729 and briefly served as the capital of the United States for a single day, September 27, 1777, when the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia ahead of advancing British forces. The city sits in the middle of Lancaster County, the most productive non-irrigated farmland in the country and the geographic center of Pennsylvania Dutch settlement. Roughly 40,000 Amish live in the surrounding countryside, the largest Old Order Amish population in North America.

The Lancaster Central Market on Penn Square has operated continuously since 1730, making it the oldest publicly owned farmers market in the United States. The current brick building dates to 1889 and houses dozens of Amish and Mennonite vendors selling produce, baked goods, meats, and prepared foods. Franklin and Marshall College, founded in 1787 with Benjamin Franklin as a charter trustee, enrolls roughly 2,400 students on a campus in the northwest corner of the city.

Fulton Theatre on North Prince Street, built in 1852 on the foundation of the old city jail, is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country. The Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League play at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The city has also developed a reputation as an arts destination, with First Friday gallery walks drawing visitors from across the region.

Milton Hershey, founder of the chocolate company that bears his name, was born just north of Lancaster in Derry Township. Armstrong Flooring, founded in Lancaster in 1860, was a dominant force in the linoleum and vinyl industries for over a century.
