Holmesburg: Pennypack Park and the Old Frankford Turnpike
Holmesburg sits in Northeast Philadelphia along the old Frankford and Bristol Turnpike, now Frankford Avenue. The neighborhood grew up in the nineteenth century around mills on Pennypack Creek, and several stone buildings from that era still stand along the creek corridor. The facility reopened briefly during periods of overcrowding at other Philadelphia jails. Much of the surrounding area developed as working-class housing associated with industrial employment along the river.
Frankford Avenue and Torresdale Avenue form the commercial spines of the neighborhood. Most residential streets contain a mix of rowhouses and twin homes built between the 1900s and 1940s, with some larger Victorian-era single-family homes closer to the park.
