Seminole: Oil Boom History and the Seminole Nation
Seminole was founded in 1906 in the Seminole Nation and grew modestly until the 1926 discovery of the Greater Seminole Oil Field transformed it into one of the largest oil boomtowns in American history. By 1929 the field was producing more than 500,000 barrels per day, and Seminole's population swelled from a few hundred to tens of thousands. Seminole State College, founded in 1931, enrolls around 1,800 students and is one of the oldest community colleges in the state. The Jasmine Moran Children's Museum downtown has drawn schoolchildren from across Oklahoma since opening in 1993. The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma maintains its tribal headquarters in nearby Wewoka.
The 1930s boom produced several buildings that still stand downtown, including the Strother Field office complex and bank buildings from the height of the oil rush. Oil and gas operations continue at reduced levels, and hog and cattle production supplements the economy across Seminole County.
