Sapulpa: Route 66 Town and Frankoma Pottery Heritage
Sapulpa was founded in 1886 and named for Jim Sapulpa, a Creek Nation trader whose store served travelers on the stagecoach route. The town became the original county seat of Creek County after Oklahoma statehood in 1907. Route 66 passed through Dewey Avenue in downtown Sapulpa from the route's designation in 1926 until its decommissioning in 1985.
Frankoma Pottery, founded in Sapulpa in 1933 by John Frank, produced distinctive earthenware in southwestern colors for decades and shipped across the country. The original factory operated until 2010, and the Frankoma brand has since been revived by new owners. The Sapulpa Historical Museum displays a collection of Frankoma pieces alongside local history exhibits.
The Rock Creek Bridge, a 1921 steel truss structure carrying the original Route 66 alignment, still stands west of the city and is preserved as a pedestrian crossing. Sapulpa sits within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation reservation. Heyburn Lake west of the city was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1950 for flood control.
