Sand Springs: Charles Page's Planned Industrial City
Sand Springs was founded in 1908 by oil wildcatter Charles Page as a planned community surrounding the Sand Springs Home, an orphanage and widow's colony he established. Page built an interurban rail line to Tulsa in 1911 and recruited industry to employ the residents. Glass manufacturing, steel, and petrochemicals followed. The Sand Springs Home continued to own significant portions of the city well into the late twentieth century.
The Case Community Park occupies land donated by Page and retains original landscape features. The Sand Springs Cultural and Historical Museum documents the founding and the industrial history of the community. Highway 412, the former Keystone Expressway, passes through the city connecting Tulsa to the Keystone Lake area.
Sand Springs sits within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation reservation as recognized after McGirt. Portions also overlap historical Osage Nation lands. The city covers roughly 22 square miles along the Arkansas River west of Tulsa.
