Sallisaw: Grapes of Wrath Setting and Sequoyah Country

Sallisaw was founded in 1888 along the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway in the Cherokee Nation. The name derives from a French word referring to salt provisions that voyageurs gathered from nearby saline springs. John Steinbeck opened The Grapes of Wrath in Sallisaw, where the fictional Joad family lived before their flight to California during the Dust Bowl. The town serves as the Sequoyah County seat.

Sequoyah's Cabin, a National Historic Landmark north of town, preserves the 1829 log home of the Cherokee silversmith who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The site has been managed by the Oklahoma Historical Society and more recently by the Cherokee Nation. Robert S. Kerr Reservoir and Lock, part of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, provides barge traffic access near Sallisaw.

Carl Albert State College operates a Sallisaw branch campus. Sallisaw sits within the Cherokee Nation reservation as recognized by extensions of McGirt.

Pretty Boy Floyd, the Depression-era bank robber killed by federal agents in Ohio in 1934, grew up near Sallisaw and is buried in the nearby Akins Cemetery. His grave has continued to draw visitors interested in the 1930s outlaw era.

The Brushy Mountains east of Sallisaw and the Ozark foothills that extend into Arkansas mark a transition from the western plains to the mountainous terrain of the Interior Highlands. Interstate 40 passes through Sallisaw on its way east toward Fort Smith, Arkansas.
