Piedmont: Farmland Turning Into OKC Exurb
Piedmont was founded in 1903 along the Frisco Railroad and named for the Piedmont region of the eastern United States. The town remained a small agricultural community through most of the twentieth century. Suburban expansion from Oklahoma City accelerated growth after 2000, and the city has become one of the faster-growing exurbs in the OKC metropolitan area.
Piedmont Public Schools have expanded facilities to accommodate new families. The city straddles the boundary between Canadian and Kingfisher counties. On May 24, 2011, an EF5 tornado struck Piedmont and nearby El Reno, killing multiple residents. The storm was part of a broader outbreak that included the Joplin, Missouri tornado the same month.
Agricultural operations still cover much of the land outside the town core, with wheat, cattle, and oil production continuing alongside suburban subdivisions. The Kilpatrick Turnpike completed in 2001 improved access between Piedmont and the northern Oklahoma City suburbs.
