Mustang: Rapid Growth on the Western OKC Fringe
Mustang was founded in 1895 along the Rock Island Railroad and remained a small agricultural community for most of its history. The city's name came from nearby Mustang Creek, where wild horses were reported by early settlers. Population grew slowly until the 1970s, when Oklahoma City's westward expansion brought residential development to the edge of Canadian County. The population has more than doubled since 2000.
Mustang Public Schools operate as an independent district serving roughly 10,000 students, and the district has expanded steadily to keep pace with new subdivisions. The Mustang Town Center hosts the Western Days Festival each September, commemorating the area's ranching origins. Much of the city's economy now depends on commuters working in Oklahoma City and nearby federal facilities.
The Kilpatrick Turnpike completed in 2001 improved east-west access between Mustang and Yukon. Retail development has concentrated along State Highway 152 near the Interstate 44 interchange, with most of the historic downtown preserved as a smaller civic and dining cluster near the rail line.
