Lawton: Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains
Lawton was established in August 1901 during the federal land lottery that opened the former Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache reservation lands to non-Native settlement. The city grew up immediately adjacent to Fort Sill, the Army artillery post founded in 1869 during the Indian Wars. Fort Sill remains the home of the United States Army Field Artillery School and the Fires Center of Excellence, training soldiers in cannon, rocket, and missile systems.
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge occupies 59,000 acres northwest of the city, protecting one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America and supporting a herd of free-ranging bison descended from animals transported from the Bronx Zoo in 1907. Mount Scott, reached by a paved road to the 2,464-foot summit, overlooks the refuge and the city beyond.
Cameron University, founded in 1908 as an agricultural school, enrolls roughly 4,500 students. The Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center on Gore Boulevard documents the tribe's history and the importance of the nearby homeland. Geronimo, the Apache leader held as a prisoner of war at Fort Sill, is buried in the Apache Cemetery on the post.
The Museum of the Great Plains in Elmer Thomas Park documents regional history with a reconstructed trading post, a prairie dog town, and exhibits on the buffalo economy that shaped the southern plains before the 1870s. The city also hosts the Lawton Arts for All Festival each May.
The Goodyear tire plant on the eastern edge of Lawton has produced automotive tires since 1978 and remains one of the largest private employers in southwestern Oklahoma alongside Fort Sill operations.
