Enid: Wheat Capital and Pilot Training Town
Enid was founded in 1893 during the Cherokee Outlet land run, the largest of the Oklahoma land openings, when more than 100,000 settlers raced for claims in a single afternoon. The town became a regional grain center, and Enid still ranks among the top three hard red winter wheat storage locations in the United States. Elevators lining the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks hold tens of millions of bushels during harvest.
Vance Air Force Base, on the southern edge of the city, has trained pilots for the U.S. Air Force since 1942. The 71st Flying Training Wing operates T-6A Texan II, T-1A Jayhawk, and T-38C Talon aircraft, graduating hundreds of undergraduate pilots each year. Vance is one of only four undergraduate pilot training bases in the Air Force.
The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center opened in 2011 and documents the 1893 land run and the settlement of northwest Oklahoma. Downtown Enid's courthouse square is dominated by the Garfield County Courthouse, a 1934 Art Deco building. Phillips University, a Disciples of Christ institution, operated in Enid from 1907 until its closure in 1998.
