El Reno was founded in 1889 during the Land Run of that year and named for nearby Fort Reno, a military post established in 1875 to monitor the Cheyenne and Arapaho reservation. The town became the county seat of Canadian County and a major division point on the Rock Island Railroad. Railroad repair shops employed much of the population through the first half of the twentieth century.
The fried onion burger, cooked by flattening a scoop of sliced onions into a beef patty on a hot grill, originated in El Reno during the Great Depression. The technique spread locally and then nationally. Three downtown diners, Sid's, Johnnie's, and Robert's Grill, continue to produce the burger by the original method.
Fort Reno itself remains a working USDA research station studying grassland agriculture. The site also includes a military cemetery with graves of German prisoners of war held at the post during World War II. El Reno sits on historic Route 66, and the original Canadian River bridge west of town carried the highway from 1933 until it was replaced in 1994.
