Chickasha: Grady County Seat and the Festival of Light
Chickasha was founded in 1892 along the Rock Island Railroad in the Chickasaw Nation and adopted a phonetic spelling of the tribe's name. It became the Grady County seat after Oklahoma statehood. The surrounding area produces cotton, wheat, and cattle, and for much of the twentieth century cotton gins operated along the rail lines.
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, founded in 1908 as the Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls, became coeducational in 1965 and now enrolls around 1,000 students. The campus centers on the Georgian-style Troutt Hall, completed in 1912. USAO is Oklahoma's designated public liberal arts university.
The Festival of Light, held each winter in Shannon Springs Park since 1993, features more than three million holiday lights and draws visitors from across the state. Chickasha is also known for the Grady County Fair and the annual Wild West Chickasha Rodeo.
