The town remained small for most of its history until the 1971 completion of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, which brought barge traffic to the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, the nation's most inland ice-free port.
The Blue Whale of Catoosa, a 80-foot concrete sculpture built by Hugh Davis in the early 1970s, became a Route 66 roadside attraction. The whale sits in a small pond east of town and has been restored multiple times. The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa, operated by the Cherokee Nation, is located in Catoosa and is one of the largest gaming facilities in Oklahoma.
The Tulsa Port of Catoosa handles more than 2 million tons of cargo annually, moving agricultural products, petroleum, and manufactured goods by barge to the Mississippi River system. Industrial tenants at the port complex employ more than 4,500 workers.
