Blanchard was founded in 1906 when W.G. Blanchard donated land to establish a town on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. The community developed as an agricultural trading center on the prairie south of what became Oklahoma City. The annual Blanchard May Daze Rodeo has drawn competitors from across the region since 1973.
The city sits within the Chickasaw Nation reservation as recognized by extensions of McGirt. Residential growth has accelerated since 2000 as Oklahoma City suburban expansion reached northern McClain County. Blanchard Public Schools have added facilities to accommodate the influx of new families.
