Willoughby: Lake County Community on the Chagrin River
Willoughby sits along the Chagrin River in Lake County, about 18 miles east of downtown Cleveland. The community was first settled in 1798 and incorporated as a village in 1853. It became a city in 1951. The city retained a downtown core along Erie Street that preserves late nineteenth-century commercial architecture, and the adjacent Willoughby Commons area has been the focus of more recent redevelopment.
The city takes its name from Westel Willoughby, a physician and educator from New York who allowed the community to use his name in exchange for his donation toward the construction of a medical school. The Willoughby Medical College operated briefly in the 1830s and 1840s before closing amid funding shortages. The building no longer stands, but the city has preserved the name.
The Willoughby Art Fair, held each year in the downtown, and regular concerts at the Wes Point Park amphitheater draw visitors from across Lake County. Downtown has also hosted First Fridays art events and other community gatherings. Lake Erie College, a private institution founded in 1856, occupies a campus just east of Willoughby in Painesville.
