Trotwood sits northwest of Dayton in Montgomery County and incorporated as a city in 1996. The community had earlier been Madison Township, and the city's current boundaries cover most of that former township. Trotwood grew during the mid-twentieth century as Dayton's western suburbs expanded, and the community developed a distinctive character shaped by both working-class industrial families and middle-class professionals.
A Memorial Day tornado outbreak on May 27, 2019, produced an EF4 tornado that struck Trotwood overnight and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Recovery efforts continued for years after the storm, and federal and state assistance supported rebuilding of public facilities. The community has worked to restore its commercial corridors and residential neighborhoods since that event.
Sycamore State Park, a 2,368-acre park within the city limits, preserves a large tract of woodland and wetland along the headwaters of Wolf Creek. The park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and bridle trails. The Trotwood-Madison City School District operates Trotwood-Madison High School and associated elementary and middle schools.
