Strongsville sits in southern Cuyahoga County about 20 miles southwest of downtown Cleveland. The city was settled in 1816 by John Stoughton Strong of Vermont, for whom it is named. It remained a farming community until the Ohio Turnpike and Interstate 71 opened in the 1950s, after which residential subdivisions began to spread across the former fields. Incorporation as a city came in 1961.
SouthPark Mall opened in 1996 and serves as the primary regional shopping center for the southwest Cleveland metropolitan area. The Strongsville Commons, a public green at the crossroads of Pearl Road and Royalton Road, preserves the original village plan around the historic Congregational Church building.
The Chagrin Valley Recreation Center, Bonnie Park in the Cleveland Metroparks Mill Stream Run Reservation, and the Gardenview Horticultural Park provide recreational space in and around the city. The Mill Stream Run Reservation extends along Baldwin Creek through the eastern part of Strongsville and offers hiking, picnicking, and bridle trails.
