Rocky River sits along Lake Erie immediately west of Lakewood and east of Westlake in Cuyahoga County. The community takes its name from the river that flows into Lake Erie at the eastern edge of the city. The Rocky River valley is preserved as the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks, one of the oldest Metroparks reservations, established in 1919.
The community was settled in the early 1800s and incorporated as a village in 1903. Rocky River became a city in 1931. The first Rocky River Bridge crossed the river valley in 1910 as the longest concrete arch bridge in the world at the time, a structure that was replaced in 1980. The Detroit Road bridge carries the modern crossing.
The Beach Cliff section of the city sits on a bluff above Lake Erie with views across the lake. Bradstreet's Landing, a public park and fishing pier, extends into the lake at the north end of the city. Lakewood Park and Beach Cliff Elementary are nearby. Rocky River City Schools operate Rocky River High School, the Roughriders, whose teams compete in the Great Lakes Conference.
