Piqua sits in northern Miami County, about 25 miles north of Dayton along the Great Miami River. The city was laid out in 1807 on the site of former Shawnee villages and named Piqua after a Shawnee group that had lived in the area. The Miami and Erie Canal reached Piqua in 1837, and the city served as a major canal port through the middle of the nineteenth century.
Piqua was the birthplace of several American manufacturing innovations during the industrial era. The Orr Felt Company, founded in 1909, became a major producer of industrial felts for papermaking and other uses. Hartzell Propeller, founded in Piqua in 1917, continues to produce propellers for general aviation aircraft and military applications, and remains headquartered in the city.
The Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, located at the north end of the city, preserves the 1810s homestead of John Johnston, who served as Indian agent for the United States government and managed relations with the Shawnee, Miami, and other tribes in the region. The site includes the restored Johnston home, barn, and a reconstructed portion of the Miami and Erie Canal.
