Mansfield: The Ohio State Reformatory and the Shawshank Trail

The Ohio State Reformatory opened in Mansfield in 1896 and operated as a state prison until 1990. The building, designed by architect Levi T. Scofield in a mix of Victorian Gothic, Romanesque, and Queen Anne styles, was the second-largest free-standing steel cell block in the world when it was completed. The reformatory served as the primary filming location for The Shawshank Redemption in 1994, and the building has since become a destination on the Shawshank Trail that guides visitors through sites used in the film.

Mansfield sits in Richland County about midway between Cleveland and Columbus. The city grew through the nineteenth century as a manufacturing center for stoves, farm equipment, and rubber products. Tappan Stove, Westinghouse Electric, and the Ohio Brass Company all had major operations in Mansfield during the twentieth century, though most of that manufacturing has since closed or moved.

The Richland Carrousel Park houses a hand-carved wooden carousel built in 1991 and operating continuously since then. Kingwood Center Gardens, a 47-acre estate and public garden, was the home of industrialist Charles Kelley King until his death in 1952, when it was bequeathed to the community. The Bissman Building, an 1886 warehouse downtown, was also used as a filming location in The Shawshank Redemption.

Malabar Farm State Park, the former home of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Louis Bromfield, lies about 10 miles south of Mansfield. Bromfield hosted the 1945 wedding of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall at the farm. The property includes the Big House, farm buildings, and hiking trails through 914 acres.

Coverage of Mansfield on Escortservice.com is limited to catalog entries for escort websites serving the area. The site catalogs. Nothing beyond cataloging is offered, including no bookings, no vetting of advertisers, and no mediation. A 21+ age gate applies to all users of the site.
