Toni Morrison was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain on February 18, 1931. Her first novel, The Bluest Eye, is set in the city and draws on the streetscapes and families she knew growing up. The steel works closed in waves through the late 1900s and early 2000s, and the tube mill is now operated by Republic Steel at a much smaller scale.
The Palace Theatre on Broadway was built in 1928 as a vaudeville house and still operates as a performing arts venue. Lakeview Park, which stretches along the lake shore at the west end of the city, features a rose garden with more than 3,000 plants and a historic bathhouse built in 1917. The Lorain Lighthouse, which stands on a breakwater at the mouth of the Black River, dates from 1917 and was restored as a museum after decommissioning.
