Lakewood: Cleveland's Streetcar Suburb on Lake Erie
Lakewood occupies a narrow strip along Lake Erie immediately west of Cleveland, bordered by the Rocky River on the west. The community grew as a streetcar suburb between 1890 and 1930, and its housing stock still reflects that period with dense blocks of doubles and fourplexes built to serve commuting workers. The city reached its peak population of about 70,000 in 1930 and remains one of the most densely populated cities in Ohio.
Lakewood separated from Rockport Township in 1889 and incorporated as a city in 1911. Detroit Avenue runs the length of the city east to west and serves as the main commercial spine, lined with small storefronts and apartment buildings above. The Beck Center for the Arts on Detroit Avenue houses a community theater, music school, and visual arts gallery in the former Beck Theater, a 1920s movie house.
The Solstice Steps at Lakewood Park, completed in 2015, provide a public amphitheater of stone terraces descending toward Lake Erie from the high bluff above. The Oldest Stone House, built in 1838, is preserved as a museum in the same park. Lakewood Hospital, operated by the Cleveland Clinic, serves as the main medical facility in the city.
