Grove City lies immediately south of Columbus in Franklin County. The community was platted in 1852 by William Foster Breck at the crossroads that would become Broadway and Park Street, and the name referred to the grove of trees on the original plat. Growth was slow through the nineteenth century, but the city expanded rapidly after the Second World War as Columbus suburbanization pushed south along Broadway, which carries U.S. Route 62.
The Beulah Park racetrack operated in Grove City from 1923 until 2014, making it the oldest thoroughbred racing facility in Ohio during its operating years. The site has since been redeveloped into a residential and commercial mixed-use area. The Town Center along Broadway has been the focus of redevelopment efforts that added new storefronts, apartments, and the Grove City Town Center Library.
Fryer Park on the west side of the city includes playing fields, walking paths, and a splash pad. The Gantz Park farm preserves an early nineteenth-century homestead including the Adam Gantz stone house, built in 1832.
