Glenville lies on the east side of Cleveland between East 105th Street and East 140th Street, bordered by Superior Avenue to the south and St. Clair Avenue to the north. The area was originally an independent village incorporated in 1872 and annexed to Cleveland in 1905. The neighborhood grew rapidly in the early twentieth century as Jewish and Eastern European families moved from the crowded lower east side of Cleveland.
Rockefeller Park, a narrow green corridor along Doan Brook, runs along the western edge of Glenville and contains the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. The gardens comprise 33 individual plots representing the ethnic heritage of groups that have settled in Cleveland, from the original Shakespeare Garden of 1916 to gardens added in the twenty-first century. The park itself was donated by John D. Rockefeller in 1897.
Glenville High School has produced a long line of star athletes, and coach Ted Ginn Sr. has sent multiple players from the program into the NFL. The neighborhood saw significant housing loss and population decline in the second half of the twentieth century, with the 1966 Hough riot beginning just to the south and the economic shifts that followed. Community development efforts in recent decades have focused on rehabilitating housing along St. Clair and Superior.
