Fairborn was created in 1950 by the merger of two older communities, Fairfield and Osborn. Osborn had originally been located several miles to the northwest but was physically moved in the 1920s when the land it occupied was flooded to create Huffman Dam Reservoir. Osborn's residents relocated their houses to the new site on the edge of Fairfield, and the two communities eventually combined under a portmanteau name.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base borders Fairborn on the south and west, and much of the city's economic life is tied to the base. Wright State University, founded in 1964 and named for the Wright Brothers, occupies a campus immediately south of the city and enrolls roughly 10,000 students. Huffman Prairie, where the Wright Brothers perfected sustained controlled flight between 1904 and 1905, is preserved as part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park on the Wright-Patterson grounds.
