Elyria: Seat of Lorain County at the Black River Falls
Elyria occupies the high ground above a pair of waterfalls on the east and west branches of the Black River, about 25 miles west of Cleveland. The city was founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, who purchased the land and established a mill at the falls. The name combines his surname with the Latinate suffix -ria. Elyria became the seat of Lorain County when the county was formed in 1822 and has held that role ever since.
Invacare Corporation, a major manufacturer of medical mobility equipment, was headquartered in Elyria from 1885 until its bankruptcy reorganization in 2023. The General Industries Corporation (Ridge Tool Company for many decades) made pipe wrenches and plumbing tools in the city beginning in 1923. Bendix Brakes built automotive braking systems here through most of the twentieth century before operations were consolidated into other facilities.
Lorain County Community College, founded in 1963 as the first county-supported community college in Ohio, sits on a 240-acre campus on the western edge of the city. Cascade Park and Elywood Park, together covering the Black River gorge through the center of town, offer walking trails past the east and west falls. The Hickories Museum, housed in a 1894 Queen Anne mansion, preserves Lorain County history.
