Chillicothe served as the first capital of the state of Ohio from 1803 to 1810, and again briefly from 1812 to 1816 before the permanent capital was established in Columbus. Tecumseh, an outdoor historical drama based on the life of the Shawnee leader, has been performed each summer at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre since 1973.
The Mead Corporation, a paper manufacturer that merged with Westvaco in 2002 to form MeadWestvaco, was founded in Chillicothe in 1846. The Mead paper mill on the Scioto River remains one of the largest employers in the area, now operated by Pixelle Specialty Solutions. The Ross County Courthouse, completed in 1858, anchors the downtown square.
