The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton on September 7, 1963, on the site where the American Professional Football Association had been founded in 1920 at a Hupmobile dealership. William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, lived in Canton and conducted his 1896 front-porch campaign from his home on North Market Avenue. He is buried in the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, a domed mausoleum on the west side of the city.
Canton city schools operate McKinley High School, which has one of the oldest continuous high school football programs in the country. The rivalry between McKinley and Massillon Tiger football, played annually since 1894, is considered one of the most storied in American high school sports.
