Barberton was founded in 1891 by Ohio Columbus Barber, an industrialist who had already built the Diamond Match Company and wanted to create a model industrial city. Barber laid out the town in a distinctive radial pattern centered on Lake Anna and brought manufacturers to the site through investment and subsidy. The community was nicknamed the Magic City for the speed at which factories and housing appeared during the 1890s.
Diamond Match produced the matches that lit kitchens across America, and the company maintained a major plant in Barberton for decades. PPG Industries, originally Pittsburgh Plate Glass, operated glass and chemical facilities in the city. Babcock and Wilcox, which built industrial boilers including those for nuclear reactors, was one of the largest employers and maintained a research and testing site in Barberton until the 1980s.
Lake Anna, a 12-acre artificial lake in the center of downtown, was created as a feature of Barber's original plan. The lake is surrounded by a public park and hosts community events through the year. Barberton's Belgian Fry, a deep-fried chicken dinner served with hot sauce, rice, and coleslaw, has been a local specialty at several family-run restaurants since the 1930s.
