Wahpeton sits at the southern end of the Red River of the North, at the point where the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers converge to form it. The North Dakota State College of Science, founded in 1903, is the city's largest institution and one of the oldest public community colleges in the United States. Agricultural processing, including a Cargill malt plant and a ProGold corn wet-milling facility in the area, drives a significant portion of the local economy. The Chahinkapa Park and Zoo on the riverbank offers one of the few small-city zoos in the region.
