Devils Lake, both the city and the body of water that gives it its name, sits in north-central North Dakota roughly 90 miles west of Grand Forks. The lake is the largest natural body of water in the state. Its name derives from the Dakota term Mni Wakan, meaning spirit water or sacred water; early white settlers translated it inaccurately as Devils Lake. Water levels have since stabilized and receded somewhat, but the inundated area remains substantially larger than it was in the 1980s.
Ice fishing draws visitors throughout the winter, and the lake is considered one of the top perch and walleye fisheries in the northern plains. Fort Totten State Historic Site, on the south shore of the lake at the Spirit Lake Reservation, preserves a military post established in 1867 that later became an Indian boarding school. The Spirit Lake Tribe operates the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort on the reservation.
