Salisbury: Food Lion, Cheerwine, and Rowan County

Salisbury is the seat of Rowan County, located along Interstate 85 between Charlotte and Greensboro. The city was founded in 1753 as a stop on the Great Wagon Road, the colonial route that brought Scots-Irish and German settlers from Pennsylvania into the southern backcountry. Salisbury served as a regional center through the 19th century and was home to a Confederate prison during the Civil War that held Union prisoners from 1861 to 1865 in conditions that killed roughly 4,000 men.

Food Lion, one of the largest supermarket chains in the Southeast, keeps its corporate headquarters in Salisbury. The chain began in 1957 as Food Town, founded by Ralph Ketner and brothers Brown and Wilson Smith, and grew to more than 1,000 stores under the Food Lion banner after Belgian retailer Delhaize Group acquired the company. Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch-Belgian parent, now operates multiple U.S. banners from regional headquarters.

Cheerwine, a burgundy-red cherry soft drink produced by the Carolina Beverage Corporation, has been made in Salisbury since 1917. The Peeler family still owns the company. The North Carolina Transportation Museum occupies the former Southern Railway Spencer Shops in adjacent Spencer, a complex that repaired steam locomotives from 1896 to 1960. The museum holds the largest rail collection in the Carolinas.

Catawba College, a liberal arts institution founded in 1851, operates in Salisbury and enrolls about 1,300 students. Livingstone College, a historically Black institution founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 1879, also operates in the city. Rowan-Cabarrus Community College provides technical and transfer education from its main campus here.
