Raleigh has served as the capital of North Carolina since 1792, when the state legislature selected the site specifically for its central location rather than any existing settlement. Cary, immediately west of Raleigh, is home to SAS Institute, one of the largest privately held software firms in the world. Red Hat, the open-source software company acquired by IBM in 2019 for $34 billion, keeps its headquarters downtown in the Red Hat Tower on Fayetteville Street. Raleigh has grown rapidly since 2000, with the metropolitan population expanding faster than most comparable Sunbelt markets on the strength of its research, government, and education base.
The North Carolina Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and the North Carolina Museum of History all operate as state museums near the Capitol. The J.S. Dorton Arena, an architectural landmark on the State Fairgrounds built in 1952, introduced a thin-shell paraboloid roof design later copied internationally. Historic Oakwood, the cemetery and neighborhood northeast of downtown, contains the graves of seven governors and numerous Civil War soldiers.
Shaw University, founded in 1865, was the first historically Black university in the South and operates in downtown Raleigh. Saint Augustine's University, also a historically Black institution, lies just north of the downtown core. Meredith College, a women's college founded in 1891, operates in the western part of the city.
