Lincolnton is the seat of Lincoln County, in the western Piedmont west of Charlotte. The county and city are named for General Benjamin Lincoln, the American commander who accepted the British surrender at Yorktown on behalf of George Washington in 1781. The town was established in 1785 and developed as a regional agricultural and commercial center through the 19th century.
The Battle of Ramsour's Mill, fought on June 20, 1780, occurred near present-day Lincolnton. Patriot militia defeated a force of Loyalists in one of the turning points of the Revolutionary War in the southern backcountry. A small historical park on East Main Street marks the site.
Lincolnton's population of around 11,000 reflects a city that has grown modestly while remaining part of the broader Charlotte commuter shed. Textile manufacturing once dominated the local economy but has largely disappeared. The Lincoln County Courthouse, built in 1923, anchors the Court Square historic district.
