Kannapolis was founded in 1906 by James William Cannon as a company town to house workers at Cannon Mills, the textile enterprise that would grow into the largest producer of household towels and sheets in the world. The name combined the Greek word for loom, kanna, with polis, city. The entire town, including homes, streets, schools, and a YMCA, belonged to Cannon Mills until the company sold its residential holdings in the 1980s. The city was not formally incorporated until 1984.
The textile complex has been replaced by the North Carolina Research Campus, a biotechnology and nutrition research park developed by Dole Food Company's David Murdock after he acquired and demolished most of the Cannon Mills facilities in 2006.
