Indian Trail takes its name from a Waxhaw Native American trade path that connected the Catawba and Pee Dee river systems. The town is in Union County southeast of Charlotte, and like many of its peers in the outer Charlotte ring it has grown sharply since 2000, with the population rising from around 12,000 to more than 37,000 today. Much of the growth has come from residential subdivision construction rather than commercial or industrial expansion.
Founded in the 1850s as a small railroad stop on the Charlotte and South Carolina line, Indian Trail remained a sleepy agricultural community for most of the 20th century. The expansion of Charlotte in the 1990s and the construction of US 74 as a commuter corridor pulled new residents east into Union County. The town's school system, part of the larger Union County Public Schools, has driven much of the family-oriented migration.
Commercial development has concentrated along US 74 (Independence Boulevard), with retail centers, restaurants, and service businesses serving the commuter population. The town remains largely residential in character, with the bulk of employment opportunities located in Charlotte to the northwest.
