Henderson is the seat of Vance County in the northern Piedmont near the Virginia border. The city was incorporated in 1841 and named for Leonard Henderson, a North Carolina Supreme Court chief justice. Through much of its history, Henderson developed as a tobacco market town with auction warehouses along the rail line that is now operated by CSX.
Vance County was created in 1881 from portions of Granville, Warren, and Franklin counties and named for Zebulon Vance, the Civil War-era governor of North Carolina. Kerr Lake, a 50,000-acre reservoir created by the 1952 completion of the John H. Kerr Dam on the Roanoke River, spans the Virginia border and serves as a major recreational area for the region. The Henderson Police Department and Vance County Sheriff's Office share jurisdiction across the county.
Tobacco's decline in the late 20th century reduced Henderson's economic base, and the city has worked to diversify through small manufacturing, retail, and regional healthcare. Maria Parham Health, a 104-bed hospital in the city, serves as the regional medical center.
