Graham is the seat of Alamance County, sitting between Burlington and the Alamance Battleground state historic site. The town was incorporated in 1851 and named for William Alexander Graham, the governor of North Carolina from 1845 to 1849 who later served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy. The 1923 Alamance County Courthouse, designed by Harry Barton in Classical Revival style, anchors the town square.
The Battle of Alamance, fought on May 16, 1771, occurred about five miles from present-day Graham. Colonial militia under Governor William Tryon defeated the Regulators, a group of backcountry settlers protesting corrupt local officials. Historians consider the battle among the earliest armed confrontations between colonists and royal authority, though its relation to the Revolution itself is disputed. The Alamance Battleground State Historic Site preserves the ground.
Graham developed alongside Burlington as a textile center. The town retains a small commercial downtown centered on the courthouse square. Elon University's campus lies a few miles to the west, in the neighboring town of Elon, and some of that institution's growth has reached into Graham.
