Goldsboro is the seat of Wayne County in eastern North Carolina. The city takes its name from Matthew T. Goldsborough, an assistant chief engineer on the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, which established a station at the site in 1838. Goldsboro's growth through the 19th and 20th centuries tracked the railroad's prominence and its position as a regional market for cotton, tobacco, and timber.
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, a 3,300-acre installation on the southeast side of the city, hosts the 4th Fighter Wing flying F-15E Strike Eagles and the 916th Air Refueling Wing flying KC-46 Pegasus tankers. The base was established in 1942 as a training facility during World War II and was named for a Navy test pilot from Goldsboro killed in a 1941 crash. The base is one of the largest employers in eastern North Carolina.
On January 24, 1961, a B-52 bomber broke apart in flight near Faro, just north of Goldsboro, dropping two Mark 39 thermonuclear bombs. One of the weapons went through five of six arming stages before its last safety switch prevented detonation. The incident, known as the Goldsboro B-52 crash, became one of the most serious nuclear weapons accidents on American soil.
Wayne Community College provides technical and transfer education in the area. Wayne Memorial Hospital serves as the primary hospital in the region. The city's commercial core along Ash Street and Center Street preserves some buildings from the early 20th century tobacco auction era.
