Gastonia: Textile Legacy and Crowders Mountain

Gastonia is the seat of Gaston County, located west of Charlotte across the Catawba River. The city grew on textiles in the early 20th century, and at one point Gaston County contained more spindles than any other county in the United States. The 1929 Loray Mill strike, centered on a textile plant in Gastonia, became one of the most violent labor disputes of the era. The strike saw the killing of police chief Orville Aderholt and striker Ella May Wiggins, and it drew national attention to conditions in southern mills.

Crowders Mountain State Park, a few miles southwest of downtown, covers roughly 5,000 acres and features the 800-foot near-vertical cliff face of the Crowders Mountain summit. The park is one of the most heavily visited in the state system, drawing hikers and rock climbers from the Charlotte region. The Kings Mountain National Military Park, site of a critical Revolutionary War battle fought in October 1780, lies just to the south on the South Carolina line.

The Loray Mill itself has been redeveloped into loft apartments and mixed-use space, preserving the 1902 brick structure while repurposing the interior. Gastonia maintains a downtown historic district with buildings reflecting the cotton mill era. The Schiele Museum of Natural History on Garrison Boulevard hosts a planetarium and regional natural history exhibits.

Belmont Abbey lies just to the east in Belmont, and Gaston College serves the county from its campus in Dallas, just north of Gastonia. The Conference of the Sons and Daughters of the Cherokee Nation maintains a center in the area reflecting the Catawba and Cherokee presence in the region before European settlement pushed most indigenous populations westward.
