Eden was formed in 1967 through the merger of three previously separate municipalities: Leaksville, Spray, and Draper. The new city took its name from the surrounding area, which William Byrd II had described as a second paradise in his 1733 survey journals. Eden sits in Rockingham County along the Dan River, near the Virginia border.
Textile manufacturing shaped all three of the predecessor towns. Fieldcrest Mills, which produced sheets and towels under several brands, was the dominant employer through most of the 20th century. Field & Stream magazine owner Karl Fleischmann's family held interests in various Fieldcrest operations. Pillowtex Corporation bought Fieldcrest in 1993 and closed most operations by 2003 after its own bankruptcy.
The Dan River chemical spill of 2014 released 39,000 tons of coal ash from a Duke Energy pond into the river, drawing national attention to coal ash storage practices across the utility's system. The cleanup and regulatory response shaped subsequent North Carolina coal ash legislation. The Eden Library and downtown Leaksville remain the civic center of the merged city.
