Cornelius lies along Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County between Huntersville and Davidson. The town was incorporated in 1905 and named for Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, a cotton merchant from Statesville who financed the local cotton gin. Through most of the 20th century, Cornelius remained a small agricultural and mill community until the 1963 impoundment of Lake Norman transformed the area into lakefront property.
Peninsula Yacht Club, Ramsey Creek Park, and several public lake access points serve the area's boating community. The Antiquity development, opened in the mid-2000s, is one of several planned residential communities that have reshaped Cornelius over the past two decades. The population has grown from about 2,500 in 1990 to more than 28,000 today.
The town shares Lake Norman access with Huntersville, Davidson, and Mooresville, and the lakefront economy has driven much of the region's development. Birkdale Village, just across the line in Huntersville, serves as a regional retail destination. The former cotton mill buildings along Catawba Avenue have been partially redeveloped as mixed-use space.
