Clemmons: Forsyth Suburb Along the Yadkin
Clemmons is a village in Forsyth County west of Winston-Salem, along Interstate 40 near the Yadkin River. The community takes its name from Peter Clemmons, a resident who operated a plantation in the area in the early 19th century. Clemmons did not incorporate until 1986, making it one of the more recently formed municipalities of its size in North Carolina.
The Tanglewood Park, a 1,100-acre public park owned and operated by Forsyth County, lies at the south edge of Clemmons. The park includes two golf courses, an equestrian center, a lake, and the annual Festival of Lights holiday drive-through display. Reynolds family donations established the park in 1951 from the former plantation of William Neal Reynolds, brother of R.J. Reynolds.
Residential subdivisions and commercial development have filled much of the area between I-40 and the Yadkin since the 1990s. The village has maintained residential zoning as the dominant use and controlled commercial development through planning guidelines. Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center, a full-service hospital, opened in 2015.
