Boone is the seat of Watauga County in the Appalachian Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. The town sits at 3,333 feet elevation, making it one of the higher municipal elevations east of the Mississippi. Boone was named for frontiersman Daniel Boone, who is believed to have camped in the area during his western migrations. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Appalachian State University, founded in 1899 as a teacher training school and later expanded into a regional university, enrolls about 21,000 students and drives much of the town's year-round economy. The Mountaineers football team made national news in 2007 when they defeated Michigan at the Big House, becoming the first FCS program to beat a ranked FBS team. The team won three consecutive FCS national championships from 2005 to 2007 under head coach Jerry Moore.
Tourism drives substantial additional economic activity. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes along the edge of Watauga County, and Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, and several ski resorts including Appalachian Ski Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort draw seasonal visitors. The Horn in the West outdoor drama, performed each summer at the Daniel Boone Amphitheatre, recreates the Revolutionary War mountain campaign.
