Albemarle is the seat of Stanly County, located east of Charlotte in the Uwharrie region. The city was incorporated in 1857 and named for George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, an English nobleman granted lands in the Carolinas by King Charles II in 1663. Through much of the 20th century the local economy relied on textile manufacturing and Alcoa's aluminum smelting operations at nearby Badin.
The Alcoa Badin Works, which began operations in 1917 on the Yadkin River, produced aluminum for nearly a century before closing in 2007. Four hydroelectric dams built by Alcoa on the Yadkin generated power for the smelting operations. Cube Hydro acquired the dam system in 2017, and the lakes including Badin Lake, High Rock Lake, and Tuckertown Reservoir remain significant recreational and power generation assets.
Stanly Community College and Pfeiffer University's Misenheimer campus provide higher education in the county. The Uwharrie National Forest, comprising 50,000 acres in Stanly, Randolph, Montgomery, and Davidson counties, offers hiking and recreation on ancient mountains eroded to their current low profile. Downtown Albemarle retains commercial buildings from the early 20th century along West Main Street.
